A Day In The Life
A Day in the Life at Southmayd Home
Ask a resident what a typical day at Southmayd Home looks like, and the answer usually starts the same way: unhurried. There's no rigid schedule pushing anyone from one activity to the next. Instead, the day moves at its own pace, built around three home-cooked meals, familiar company, and enough going on that no one has to be bored, but never so much that anyone feels rushed.
The day begins in the resident dining room, where breakfast is served family style, the same way lunch and dinner will be later on. All meals are prepared in-house by a kitchen staff with decades of combined experience, and residents can request their own recipes to be worked into the rotating menu. A morning snack follows a little later for anyone who wants it, part of the three-times-a-day snack service that runs between meals.
Because every resident has a private room, mornings also come with the option to simply stay in, read, or get ready at one's own pace before joining the day. Housekeeping and laundry are handled by staff throughout the week, so the morning isn't spent on chores unless a resident wants something to do with her hands.
After lunch, the day opens up. Southmayd's activity calendar is planned partly from resident suggestions, so it changes from week to week, but it regularly includes:
- Word games, trivia, and memory exercises
- Live music and entertainment
- Arts, crafts, and painting
- Horticulture and gardening
- Light exercise programs
- Movies and Wii games
For residents who want to get out, there are regular outings too — shopping trips, restaurant meals, garden tours, and seasonal favorites like leaf-peeping drives in the fall and Christmas light viewing in the winter.
Much of the socializing happens naturally, without any activity on the calendar at all. Southmayd has two adjoining living rooms for conversation, games, and television, along with two second-story sun porches that stay bright with natural light and overlook the grounds. On a nice afternoon, residents often move outside to the one-acre garden park and its patio terrace, where fresh-air dining and quiet conversation are part of the daily rhythm.
Socialization is key for cognitive stimulation — which is why gathering space, indoors and out, is treated as seriously as the activity calendar itself.
Underneath the daily rhythm is a 24-hour resident care department, overseen by a full-time registered nurse. Medication administration and personalized care are handled as part of the monthly fee, but the goal is always to support independence rather than take it over — residents are encouraged to do as much for themselves as they're able, with help there the moment it's needed.
Dinner brings everyone back to the dining room for the last of the day's three full meals, with an evening snack to follow for anyone who wants one. After dinner, the pace slows further — more time in the living rooms, a movie, or simply an early night in the privacy of one's own room.
It's a day shaped less by a fixed routine than by the people living it. Some residents fill their afternoons with activities; others prefer the sun porch and a book. Both are the point. At Southmayd, a day in the life looks less like a schedule and more like the kind of life residents were already living before they moved in — just with good meals, good company, and support close at hand.
