Resident Care Head Aide - Part Time

Description: Ensures medications are administered to residents according to Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) regulations. Monitor residents’ status and respond to their needs as necessary. 

Supervisor: Registered Nurse Supervisor

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the current shift’s resident care aide; can request assistance of the kitchen.

Status: Non-exempt; hourly; will work weekend, holidays, and evenings as needed by the department. $1 differential during third and weekend shifts.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide assistance to residents with their activities of daily living; ensure residents are aware of and receive the services to which they are entitled in a safe environment that promotes their rights, dignity, and freedom of choice.
  • Administer and document residents’ medications, treatments, and vital statistics as per physician’s written order and in accordance with Southmayd policies and procedures.
  • Make rounds to see each resident during shift, prioritize the specific needs of residents; organize and communicate work assignments to resident care assisting aides.
  • Eat meals with residents in the dining room in order to perform Heimlich maneuver and/or give assistance as needed, ensure other staff is present should the need arise to be absent.
  • Responds to emergencies in a calm, efficient manner and take appropriate actions as required.
  • Communicate changes in residents’ physical and/or mental status or condition and other pertinent information; provide daily shift reports and other periodic reports
  • Maintain accountability for controlled substances and notify the RN supervisor AND the executive director of discrepancies or issues
  • Address phone calls and visitors relating to resident care
  • Be available to residents, co-workers, supervisors, and visitors in the medication room when not making rounds or addressing a resident related issue
  • Provide support to the resident care department in the role as resident care assisting aide as needed. 
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities, as required, to support our mission of providing, “to self-sufficient women over the age of 60, a residence that is safe and nurturing in a family-like atmosphere”.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attends meetings, in-service and other trainings as required.
  • Complies with the resident’s Bill of Rights.
  • Maintains residents’ confidentiality and respects privacy; always treats residents with dignity and respect.
  • Interacts positively with residents, family members, guests, co-workers, and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid certification from a CT state-approved course for Medication Administration or will obtain certification within eight (8) weeks of employment.
  • CPR certification or will obtain certification within eight (8) weeks of employment.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in the care of the elderly is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must be proficient in reading, writing, and mathematics skills
  • Must be proficient in knowledge of drug interactions, side effects, and incompatibilities, as well as observational and assessment skills
  • Must be able to hear and respond to pages and able to communicate to residents and emergency personnel in English.
  • Knowledge using phone, fax, copy machines, elevator, scale, showers, whirlpool equipment, adjustable beds/chairs, blood pressure digital and manual, blood sugar and body temperature monitoring devices and various other equipment and supplies.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time and walk to and from locations within the building while making rounds; may sit, bend, reach, and move intermittently during working hours, may need to support residents.
  • Frequent hand washing of hands
  • Exposed to residents’ conditions, unpleasant sights, smells, and contagious diseases, exposure to blood and/or body fluids.
  • May be mandated to stay in an emergency, work different shifts, weekends, and/or holidays in order to ensure a head aide is on duty at all times.
