RED HAT SOCIETY LUNCHEON & FASHION SHOW
The "Scarlet Ladies" of Southmayd
Home, a newly formed Red Hat Society chapter, invited the
"Brassy Belles" chapter of Waterbury to attend
a Red Hat Society luncheon and fashion show on Thursday,
February 23 at Southmayd Home.
According to Fran Schinkel, Recreation Director
and "Queen Mother" of the Southmayd Home Scarlet
Ladies Chapter, the Scarlet Ladies plan monthly activities
including tea parties with other local chapters, luncheons
at area restaurants, creating crafts projects as donations
for local charities and philanthropic visits to healthcare
and rehabilitation centers.
Red Hat Societies encourages fun after fifty
(and before) for women of all walks of life and features
"silliness as the comedy relief of life". Referring
to the famous poem "Warning" by Jenny Joseph,
which depicts an older woman in purple clothing with a red
hat, the rules require that women attend functions in full
regalia, (red hat, purple outfit for women 50 and over,
or pink hat and lavender outfit for women under 50).
Underneath all the frivolity, the women share
a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and
a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes them next.
