Friends And Family Night - December 2008

Southmayd Home's annual Friends and Family Night was held on Tuesday, December 2. In preparation for opening up and showcasing the Home to their family and friends, our resident "elves" spent many hours decorating the Home and trimming the annual Christmas tree with the home crafted ornaments made by the residents.

Whether you like to cook or just like to eat, the smells of roast turkey, baking chocolate, tomato sauce simmering on the stove, or the sugar-and-spice aromas of a freshly baked apple pie often evoke some of our most treasured memories from our past.

This book is our attempt to preserve some of our residents’ special recipes for soups, salads, breads, stews, vegetables, cakes, pies and other desserts of long-ago.  We specifically asked for, and are especially delighted, that most of the recipes are handwritten by the residents; some actually from the original family recipe-box index card!  We scanned each recipe and placed it on special watercolor paper and then Janet Bradley, our art instructor, created most of the images and helped our residents decorate each recipe.

Some of our residents truly miss cooking and baking, so Fran Schinkel, our Recreation Director, organized special baking activities to make several pumpkin-flavored treats to sell at our Pumpkin Festival.  It was amusing to see our ladies, adorned with hair nets and gloves, working together to measure, sift, stir and pour the batter into the pans.  We captured on film and produced a video presentation of those cooking activities along with some reminiscing stories about holidays, favorite foods and learning to cook.  Copies of this DVD can be obtained by calling the Executive Director, Marda Gutierrez at (203) 754-0360.
