SUMMER OUTINGS

Our first 2009 summer event was Senior Day at Quassy Amusement Park in Middlebury. While enjoying a delicious barbeque, an entertaining duo sang and played Golden Oldies and summertime songs. After lunch, our residents and volunteer drivers always board the train for a ride around the track, before venturing onto the Carousel ride. Although the skies were a little cloudy in the beginning of the day, the sun came out just as it was time for the traditional boat ride.  The perfect ending of the day was eating ice cream cones on the deck overlooking the lake.

The residents’ annual Connecticut River Boat Cruise took place in early July under clear skies and beautiful weather. The boat tour departed from further south this year, from East Haddam offering the residents different the sights from the boat such as the Goodspeed Opera House. As usual, a picnic lunch prepared by the kitchen, was eaten on the boat.

A Red Hat outing to Glebe Farm to tour their gardens took place on July 15 followed by Tea and Crumpets served at the Curtis House in Woodbury.

In August, Fran organized a Magical Mystery Tour. Residents had no idea where they were going, nor what they would do. The first stop was in Southbury at the Jewelry Café where the residents each made a bracelet followed by a pizza lunch at Julio’s restaurant. Always a special treat for our animal lovers was a visit to the Horse Farm in Southbury. Fran topped off the day’s field trip with ice cream at Denmo’s Dairy Stand.

Jenning’s Beach in Fairfield has become a favorite outing.  Once again, the weather was spectacular! After lunch, the residents headed down to the beach, while others enjoyed basking in the sun and reading.

In early September, the residents took a trip to play miniature golf in Bristol.

Our van holds only 6 passengers so for our field trips and outings, we are always in need of volunteers to help drive.  The more drivers we have, the more spaces we can offer to the residents to participate.
