Perhaps one of Waterbury's best kept secrets is Southmayd Home, a nonprofit organization, located in the historic and beautiful Overlook district. Southmayd is licensed by the Department of Public Health as a Residential Care Home and is a very affordable alternative to assisted living.

Founded in the 1890's Southmayd's mission is to offer older women who want or need some assistance to maintain their independence a comfortable and safe place to live. Currently Southmayd Home is unique in its philanthropic tradition to fund approximately half of the actual cost for its residents. This is due in part to the legacies of many of the women who have resided here over the years as well as generous donations, past and present.

Southmayd Home has a warm and friendly atmosphere with two separate but adjoining living rooms, two bright sun porches, a beautifully appointed dining room, an arts and crafts room and most important, a caring and capable staff. The Resident Care staff are certified to manage and administer daily medications to the residents, providing assurance that medications are taken exactly as prescribed.

Each resident has her own private room where she may spend as much time as she chooses, or enjoy the company of the other women. Engaging activities including word games, bingo, pottery, art class, horticulture therapy as well as professional entertainment are planned for each day and are lead by an Activities staff member or volunteer.
