FRIENDS & FAMILY NIGHT – DEC. 8
Southmayd Home celebrated with our residents’ friends and family members during our Annual Friends & Family Night on Tuesday, December 8. A light supper buffet opened the evening’s celebration at 6:00 pm followed by a program in the living room. After the program, we returned to the dining room for holiday cookies and desserts.
Bonnie Leavenworth, President of the Board of Directors welcomed all to our program and thanked all who had already contributed to the Enhancing Life Project which was launched in August of this year. Michele Finn, chairman of the Board of Director’s fund raising committee also thanked this year’s donors and invited all to view the Enhancing Life Project Donor’s Plaque now hung in the lobby of the front entrance. Next, Executive Director Marda Gutierrez reminded all who were present of ways to volunteer that also “enhance the lives of our residents” and then turned the program over to our Recreation Director Fran Schinkel.
After summarizing the year’s many philanthropic crafts projects, Fran presented the background to the Rainforest project which began in the summer during our “Nature” week. With the assistance of Art Instructor, Janet Bradley, our talented residents used a new media of textured paints to create beautiful impressionistic pictures of animals, insects and plants found in the rainforests. 34 poems were then written by the residents during their “Giggles” activity this fall. Of those, 16 were read aloud by residents while the artwork that inspired the poem was shown on the screen.
Fran ended the program by showing the Save Me booklet that was published by Southmayd Home to help save the rainforests.
