Enhancing Life Project

For more than 100 years, the caring, professional staff of Southmayd Home has offered a full recreational program and assistive services such as medication management, three delicious meals daily, weekly housekeeping, linen and towel service and assistance with bathing.

Our Setting
Southmayd Home moved to its present location in Waterbury’s Historic Overlook neighborhood in 1925. Projects to preserve, upgrade or improve this historic property are essential and present unique budgetary challenges.

Our Charter
Southmayd Home is dedicated to ensuring the women of Waterbury and its surrounding towns have an affordable alternative to living alone. With the rising cost of such expenses as energy, repairs and employee benefits, maintaining our low monthly rates is increasingly more challenging. Now, more than ever, we need your help!

Philanthropic Tradition
Southmayd Home owes its beginnings to the foresight, unfailing energy and resourcefulness of founder, Sarah Donaldson. In 1891, with $10 of her own funds, an extraordinary amount of money in that time period, Sarah Donaldson recruited 99 more women to donate $10 and launched the beginning of what is now Southmayd Home. This tradition of philanthropic service to senior women has continued through two World Wars and into the 21st century.

Our Vision
Our Enhancing Life Project seeks to upgrade interior and facility furnishings; purchase recreational or other equipment; improve the safety of our lovely gardens; enhance social interaction and promote healthier, happier lives for our senior women.

Recent Improvements
Our latest comfort and safety improvements include: new carpeting, new sofas, armchairs and draperies in the living room, card tables and chairs in the sun room, new dining room chairs and improvements to bathrooms.
Huge improvements to the front entrance have already been realized thanks to Enhancing Life funds. We are still in need of new window awnings to complete the renovations to the front. The rear garden area, where our ladies can enjoy a pleasant and safe outdoor experience, is our next highest priority.

Southmayd Home is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization.
All donations and contributions are applicable for IRS tax credit.
